If you want to keep your carpets looking fresh and clean, then it’s important to vacuum on a regular basis. However, even with regular vacuuming, your carpets will start to look dull and worn over time. The reason for this is that vacuuming will only remove loose dirt from the upper layers of the carpet. Deeply ground in dirt which is trapped in the carpet will not usually be removed by even the most efficient vacuum cleaner. Accidental liquid spills, if not treated quickly, can frequently become slightly sticky after they dry out and act as a magnet for dust and dirt.

Obviously, vacuuming on a frequent and regular basis is a good first step to prevent dirt and dust becoming lodged in your carpet. The ideal scenario is that the dust and dirt is removed before it can become ground in and trapped. Heavy traffic areas – hallways, passages, the floor near doors, hallways etc. – should be cleaned at twice each week. If you have young children, pets, or both, then you may even need to do this three times a week. This should prove an effective way to prevent dust and dirt being collected and trapped in the carpet.

However, some penetration of dirt deep into the fabric of your carpet is inevitable. Wet shoes, accidental spills and heavy traffic will, over time grind dirt and dust into your carpet and it will appear shabby and dull. As this dirt cannot be removed by vacuuming, a different cleaning method must be used.

One of the best ways to remove this trapped dirt is to deep clean your carpet periodically using a carpet washer. This uses detergent and water to loosen and collect the dirt and then removes it. Depending upon your circumstances – the amount of traffic over your carpet, whether or not you have pets and small children – a thorough clean using a carpet washer every 3 to 6 months will go a long way towards keeping your carpet looking clean, removing odours and helping to increase the life of your carpet.

As with normal vacuum cleaners, carpet washers are available in a variety of different styles and, as with standard vacuum cleaners, cylinder and upright models are the most common. You can hire carpet washers in larger supermarkets and DIY stores. You can even hire a professional carpet cleaning company to visit your home and clean your carpets for you if you like. You can also buy your own carpet washer, and the price of these cleaners is relatively low these days, so that may be an attractive option for many. Should you decide to buy your own cleaner then you will be able to use it to treat any accidental spills and stains before they have enough time to become ground in and established.

Whether you decide to to buy or rent, regular use of a carpet washer to clean your carpets thoroughly will prolong the lifetime of your carpets and more than cover the purchase price or hire cost. Your carpets will look much better and be odour free. Especially important if you have very young children at an age where they crawl around on the floor, the environment will be much more hygienic.
